Encyclopedia > Philip I, Metropolitan of Moscow

Philip I (Филипп in Russian) (? — 1473), Metropolitan of Moscow since 1464.

Philip's life can only be tracked to 1455, when he was already the Archbishop of Suzdal. In 1464, he was appointed Metropolitan of Moscow after Theodosius's resignation. In 1470s, Philip was actively engaged in a struggle against the Polish-Lithuanian influence over Novgorod. In 1472, he was against admitting a papal legate into Moscow, who had been accompanying Sophia Paleologue. That same year, Philip started reconstructing the Cathedral of the Dormition in the Moscow Kremlin. However, he hired inexperienced workers and soon after his death the building collapsed. It was rebuilt by Aristotile Fioravanti.
