Philipstown is a town located in Putnam County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 9,422.


Incorporated in 1788 as one of the three original towns in what is now Putnam County, the Town of Philipstown's main population centers are the Village of Cold Spring, Garrison, and the Village of Nelsonville.


Its western border is the Hudson River. Putnam Valley was part of Philipstown until 1839, and a small portion of the town north of Putnam Valley was transferred to Kent in 1877.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 133.4 km˛ (51.5 mi˛). 126.5 km˛ (48.8 mi˛) of it is land and 7.0 km˛ (2.7 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 5.22% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 9,422 people, 3,599 households, and 2,548 families residing in the town. The population density is 74.5/km˛ (193.0/mi˛). There are 3,983 housing units at an average density of 31.5/km˛ (81.6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 95.57% White, 1.13% African American, 0.15% Native American, 1.14% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.92% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. 3.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 3,599 households out of which 32.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.8% are married couples living together, 6.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% are non-families. 23.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.06.


In the town the population is spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 4.9% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 29.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 94.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.5 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $71,895, and the median income for a family is $84,220. Males have a median income of $56,536 versus $41,969 for females. The per capita income for the town is $37,738. 6.0% of the population and 2.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.4% of those under the age of 18 and 14.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
