Phôngsali (Lao ຜົງສາລີ) is a province of Laos, located in the north of the country. Often misspelled Phongsali, the correct romanization is Phongsaly. The capital of the province is the city of Phôngsali. Phôngsali is located between Yunnan (China), and Lai Chau in Vietnam. Its culture has thus been historically heavily influenced by China.
Commerce
Phôngsali is the primary trade gateway between Laos and China, exporting lumber and importing several types of finished goods. There are also several Chinese manufacturing companies in the province, along with other foreign investment.
Geography
Phôngsali is located high in the mountains (~450-1800m above sea level), with a relatively cool climate. Because of economic commerce with China, large portions of the province have been deforested.
Phongsaly province the most remote in northern Laos, enclosed three sides by China and Vietnam and cut off to overland travel from Oudomsay to the south.
Phongsali has a year round cool climate with temperatures as low as 5 degrees Celcius at night.
Phongsaly can be reached by road and river, from Oudomsay it is possible to travel by road as far as Muangkhua in southern Phoisaly then continue from Muangkhua by boat.
Phongsaly is situated in the northern most part of the country sharing borders with China and Vietnam.
A height of 1,625 meters can be reached by road or for the energetic; an even better view can be seen by ascending additional 431 steps to the top of Phou Fa.
The weather in Phongsaly is well suited to the saying that is has " four seasons in a single day " In the morning and evening the cold rolls in, the daytime is very humid and the afternoons are rainy, rendering the forest and surrounding vegetation a luscious green color throughout the year.
