Pickens County is a county located in the state of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 22,983. The county's county seat is Jasper, Georgia6.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 603 km˛ (233 mi˛). 601 km˛ (232 mi˛) of it is land and 2 km˛ (1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.28% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 22,983 people, 8,960 households, and 6,791 families residing in the county. The population density is 38/km˛ (99/mi˛). There are 10,687 housing units at an average density of 18/km˛ (46/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 96.21% White, 1.27% Black or African American, 0.38% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.04% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. 2.03% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 8,960 households out of which 31.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.50% are married couples living together, 8.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.20% are non-families. 20.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 2.91.


In the county the population is spread out with 23.60% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 29.80% from 25 to 44, 25.80% from 45 to 64, and 13.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 95.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.20 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $41,387, and the median income for a family is $47,123. Males have a median income of $32,039 versus $22,866 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,774. 9.20% of the population and 6.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.20% of those under the age of 18 and 7.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Pickens County, Alabama Genealogical Records Information (871 words)
Pickens County is located in the western part of the state.
It was created by an act of the Alabama legislature on 1820 Dec. 20, as Picken's County.
The first county seat was established at Picken's Courthouse (later called Pickens and Pickensville) and moved to Carrollton in 1830.

Pickens County, Georgia was named for Revolutionary War hero General Andrew Pickens.
He defeated General Boyd at Kettle Creek in 1779, was engaged in the Battle of Stone's Ferry in the same year, routed the Cherokees at Tomassee, and in 1781 so distinguished himself at the Battle of Cowpens that Congress voted him a sword.
He compelled the surrender of the British forts at Augusta, Ga., fought under General Greene in the Campaign of Ninety-Six, and by a successful expedition against the Cherokees in 1782 gained from them a large strip of territory which later became part of Georgia.
