Pickering Township was surveyed and established in 1791 as part of what was then York County. Its name derives from Pickering, North Yorkshire in North Yorkshire, England and was one of five townships along Lake Ontario named for towns in northeast England (York, Scarborough, Pickering, Whitby and Darlington).
