While the Com- monwealth lasted, Le Gros, a rich and influential merchant, and his fellow jurats sanctioned many breaches of James I's Letters Patent of 1611: a third of Sark's tenement lands were dismembered as a result of this opportunistic trading.
Dame Le Pelley and her son Nicholas modernised and enlarged the Le Gros family house at La Perronerie and made it the Seigneurie, designating the Manoir as the minister's house.
Pierre le Pelley II and III responded positively with public projects: the mill was refitted, a free school was built.
