Pierre Elliott Trudeau High School (commonly known as PETHS, PET, or simply Trudeau) is a public, bilingual English and French-immersion secondary school in Markham, Ontario, Canada. History

Initially called the "Unnamed Secondary School in North Markham", construction of Pierre Elliott Trudeau High School began in the summer of 2001. It was built in the Berzcy Village subdivision on Bur Oak Avenue, just east of Kennedy Road and south of Major Mackenzie Drive. It was officially opened in the fall of 2002 to students in Grades 9 and 10, most of which were transferred from nearby Markville Secondary School. Growth

Trudeau boasted an enrollment of approximately 500 students and had about 50 staff members in its inaugural year. In the subsequent school year, 2003-2004, Trudeau's enrollment grew to over 730 with the addition of Grade 11. Its staff members grew to over 60.


In its third functioning year, Pierre Elliott Trudeau High School grew to over 1000 students in Grades 9 to 12, and had over 100 staff members. Robert Hart became an additional vice-principal at Trudeau. This was also the year that saw Trudeau's first graduating class in the spring.


Trudeau will be celebrating its 5th anniversary in 2007.


Demographics

The student body of Trudeau High reflects the multicultural legacy of Pierre Elliott Trudeau himself. Pierre Elliott Trudeau High School draws its students from predominantly immigrant families, and in which most of the students are second-generation Canadians. The ethnic makeup of the school is quite diverse made up of students who themselves or their family originate from East Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, the West Indies, and Europe. English is the common language of the school, whereas Canada's other official language, French, is mostly spoken in French-immersion classes. Because of the school's multicultural population, many students are bilingual or multilingual. East Asia is a subregion of Asia that can be defined in either geographical or cultural terms. ... Identity

The students of Trudeau are collectively known as the Trudeau Trailblazers. This name was elected by the student body in the spring of 2003. In the fall of 2003, students submitted designs for a mascot design competition using the team name of the Trudeau Trailblazers. Three final designs were shown to the student body and were voted upon during the Grade Representative elections. The winner was The Blazer, designed by then-Grade 11 student Ritchie Li.


In the spring of 2005, the Trudeau Identity Committee was formed to help the school develop its visual identity. Strive Higher, Soar Further was selected as one of three choices in a school-wide election for a school motto. Subsequently, a crest design followed. Again, three finalists were chosen, and The Spark was chosen as the winner by the Committee. It was designed by former student Sammy Fung.


School Events

Pierre Elliott Trudeau High School takes great pride in hosting as well as organizing several school and community events. The most notable ones include Blazers' Bash, Cabaret, Trudeaumania (or Spirit Day), Trudeau Idol and the Sears Ontario Drama Festival. Other events include Spirit Day Fridays (formerly known as Spirit Week), Winter and Spring Music Nights, Pierre Elliott Trudeau's Birthday, Drama Mosaics and Battle of the Bands. Blazers' Bash is Trudeau's annual spirit day which is held around May and is organized by the Student Activities Council (SAC). It is an outdoor event with a "carnival" atmosphere involving inflatable attractions, food and beverage, as well as the famous dunk tank where students have the opportunity to dunk voluntary teachers or students in a tank of water.


Cabaret is the school's annual talent show, where students and staff alike are able to showcase their many talents. The event is organized by the Trudeau Theatrics Society and is held around early December.


Trudeaumania is the school's annual spirit day for Grade 9 students, where they head to Green Acres to participate in several events rallying on teamwork, initiative and participation. Trudeaumania was the affectionate nickname given to the great excitement generated by Pierre Trudeaus entry into Canadian politics in 1968. ...


The Sears Ontario Drama Festival is an annual theatrical showcase event in which several schools across Ontario compete in. Trudeau has a reputation for hosting the district showcase and has had great success at the festival, advancing to the Regional Showcase at Hart House theater at the University of Toronto three times in the past four competitions. The Great Theater of the World (2003), The Arabian Nights (2005), and Dragon of the Winds (2006) successfully advanced to the Regionals. The Calendar Effect (2004) however was the only production that did not advance. The play for the 2007 Festival is Stories Gone Wilde. Trudeau Idol is an annual event where students perform songs at lunch time in the cafeteria and votes are cast online. Each week a member is eliminated until there are only two contestants left. These two contestants perform at the annual "Blazer's Bash" and winner is decided by the crowd.


The Battle of the Bands (Bob) was created for Trudeau student-made bands and the Invitational Battle of the Bands (iBob) was created for student bands from other high schools across the area. They are both hosted at Trudeau and organized by Trudeau's Music Council. Bands compete for prizes, which often includes free recording time at a local studio.
