Van 1935 tot 1947 was hij werkzaam bij de onderzeedienst van de Koninklijke Marine.
Aansluitend was hij minister van Defensie in de Kabinetten Marijnen, Cals en Zijlstra, tot hij in 1967 benoemd werd tot minister-president en minister van Algemene Zaken in het Kabinet-De Jong.
Na zijn premierschap was De Jong nog tot 1974 lid van de Eerste Kamer, en vanaf 1972 voorzitter van de fractie van de KVP.
