Pigeon River Fish & Wildlife Area is dedicated to providing quality hunting and fishing opportunities while maintaining 11,605 acres of land, 529 acres of lakes and impoundments and 17 miles of free flowing river.
Pigeon River Fish and Wildlife Area was established in 1956 when three impoundments in the Pigeon River Valley were given to the state.

The greater Pigeon River ecosystem, located in northeastern Indiana, is among the most significant biodiversity sites in the Great Lakes watershed and is perhaps best known for its extensive wetlands which support many imperiled plants, reptiles and amphibians.
The oak uplands surrounding the Pigeon River were originally dominated by grasslands, wetlands, and dry oak woodland and savanna communities.
The large number of imperiled species present in the Pigeon River system that require wetland habitats reflects both the high-quality of remaining habitats in the system, as well as the efficiency with which wetlands have been destroyed and altered on a regional basis and local basis.
