Baseball

In Baseball, a Pinch hitter is a common term for a substitute batter. Batters can be substituted at any time the ball is dead; the manager may use any player not yet in the game as a substitute. Cricket

In cricket, pinch hitter is the usual term for a batsman promoted up the batting order in order to score quick runs. As scoring runs quickly makes a batsman more likely to get out, it is generally considered unwise for a top-order batsman to attempt this. Therefore, on the fall of a wicket, a lower-order batsman (such as a bowler) is sometimes promoted. There is less importance placed on his wicket, so he can play with more freedom. This is an important tactic in One-day International cricket, with its occurrence in Test cricket far less regular. For the insect, see Cricket (insect). ... The Pitcher is a Pinch Hitter from The Hardball Times (1866 words)
Criss was the first player to pinch hit at least 100 times in his career, compiling 35 hits in 147 at bats for a.239 average.
But he was most valued for his bat off the bench, as he hit more than 13 pinch hits in a season five years in a row, from 1929 to 1933, and led the league in both pinch at bats and hits three different years.
Still, pinch hitting is a tough job and he is pinch hitting pretty well; he is batting.263 in the role and he's tied for fifth in the majors in total pinch hits (10 for 38).
