The Pipe Rolls are a series of financial records from England, beginning in 1130 and lasting, mostly complete, until 1833. They were used by the Exchequer (treasury) and recorded such things as audits of kings' incomes and expenses. They are named after the "pipe" shape formed by a rolled up piece of parchment on which records were originally kept. The Exchequer and Pipe Rolls were a great innovation in government, nothing else like it existed in Europe. The Great Roll of the Exchequer was known as the " PipeRoll "; this contained the various " pipes" or enrolled accounts of the sheriffs, andc., which were so called either from being sent in a cylindrical case or as resembling a pipe in shape when rolled (see Records).
The elfin pipes have commonly flat broad heels in place of the sharp spur now found on clay pipes, and on that flat space the mark or initials of the maker is occasionally found.
Clay pipes are made in prodigious numbers by hand labour with an iron mould and a steel wire for forming the tube of the stem.

The lateral guide rolls allow the fabricator to make these pipe bending machines accomplish two dimensional bends such as spiral stair cases or hand railing with the proper incline and a sweeping bend to the left or right.
The top roll has a hydraulic power feed to lower the roll and has a slip differential to compensate for the different speeds required between the outside of the bend and the inside of the bend.
