Piute County is a county located in the state of Utah. As of 2000, the population is 1,435. It was named for a tribe of Indians in the area. It has an area of 763 sq. miles and the population is 1,535 (1999). The county seat is Junction and the largest city is Circleville.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,983 km˛ (766 mi˛). 1,963 km˛ (758 mi˛) of it is land and 21 km˛ (8 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.04% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,435 people, 509 households, and 389 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km˛ (2/mi˛). There are 745 housing units at an average density of 0/km˛ (1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 95.61% White, 0.14% Black or African American, 1.18% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 1.88% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. 4.46% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 509 households out of which 33.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.60% are married couples living together, 5.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.40% are non-families. 22.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.79 and the average family size is 3.25.


In the county, the population is spread out with 30.70% under the age of 18, 6.60% from 18 to 24, 19.70% from 25 to 44, 26.00% from 45 to 64, and 17.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 104.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.60 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $29,625, and the median income for a family is $35,147. Males have a median income of $26,771 versus $18,438 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,697. 16.20% of the population and 11.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.10% of those under the age of 18 and 7.00% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
