Encyclopedia > Place names with English meanings

All place names have meanings, though often they are not immediately obvious, and occasionally they are now completely lost to us. Place-name etymology is a serious and complex branch of linguistics which researches this. In English-language place names, the etymological meanings are sometimes still obvious: Newcastle upon Tyne and Boulder, Colorado mean exactly what they appear to. In other cases, the similarity between a place name and an English word is exactly the opposite: the word sandwich is derived indirectly from the place-name Sandwich, Kent (via the name of the Earl of Sandwich). It can however happen, that a place name appears similar to an English word by coincidence, with no etymological connection. One reason for this is that English has very few inflections, which maximises the possibilities for puns and double meanings. Another is that many central European place names end with the suffix -ing, a Germanic element meaning "people", which makes them look like the present participles of English verbs. The collecting of place names with such unetymological meanings, especially when the meanings are potentially amusing, has become an element of popular Anglophone culture. The remainder of this article is a list of place names which look or sound like English words, but have no etymological connection to them. Look up Anglophone in Wiktionary, the free dictionary. ...
