Placencia is a peninsula on the Caribbean Sea coast of the Stann Creek District of Belize. Starting in the late 20th century it became a tourism destination. The largest community on the peninsula is the Village of Placencia, with a population of 458 permanent residents in the 2000 census. Stann is a word that came from when the colonialist were coming from the old world to the new world and needed safe havens, they would go in "stanns." Thats how the name of this area came about.
