Plasma will be the new desktop and panel user interface tool for KDE 4, the next major release of the K Desktop Environment. This will combine the KDE panel, the desktop, and SuperKaramba into one application, providing an API for developers to write widgets and mini-applications called plasmoids, to place on the desktop and panel. Kross scripting framework will be used to allow developers to write widgets in JavaScript, Ruby, and Python in addition to C++ [1]. An important change with Plasma is that all objects on the desktop can now be considered plasmoids, there is no longer a distinction between the panels (like the taskbar) and widgets. Plasma will separate components into “data engines” and their visualization counterparts. This is intended to reduce the total programming effort when there are multiple possible visualizations of given data; and to make it easier for the data engine and its visualizations to be written independently.[2] In addition to its own widgets, Plasma developers have added support for Apple Dashboard widgets, and plan to support Opera browser widgets in the future.[3] SuperKaramba widgets used in KDE 3.x will also be supported in Plasma, as SuperKaramba has been implemented as a library in Plasma for legacy support. Dashboard is an application for Apples Mac OS X v10. ...
