Playa Vista is a neighborhood in southwestern Los Angeles, California. It is bordered by the unincorporated enclave of Marina Del Rey to the north, by Culver City to the east, by the neighborhood of Playa del Rey to the southwest, and by the upland part of Westchester to the south. The core of Playa Vista is a new planned community of that name, located on the former site of the Hughes Airport facility in the Ballona Wetlands. After years of litigation between the developer and local environmentalists, the two sides came to a compromise in 2002. The development of Playa Vista has not only sparked opposition from environmentalists and nearby residents, but from people concerned with the safety of Playa Vista's residents as well. The City of Los Angeles and Playa Vista knew for several years that explosive gas was collecting beneath Playa Vista from the Southern California Gas Company's gas storage reservoir, but did not halt development. Though the City of Los Angeles conducted a safety study of the soil at the location of the development project, it did not find any conclusive evidence that the gas posed a hazard. However, some EPA officials believe that the gas leak is a risk to human health, as high levels of hydrogen sulfide, among other neurotoxins and carcinogens, were discovered in Playa Vista's soil. The mission of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is to protect human health and to safeguard the natural environment: air, water, and land. ... Opponents of Playa Vista have organized along three main lines - residents who oppose adding more traffic to the already gridlocked Lincoln and Centinela Boulevards, environmentalists who say the land is rightfully part of the Ballona Wetlands, and Native Americans whose ancestors are buried on a portion of the land.
