In the first half of the show, Damien single-handedly builds up a successful shipping business and recruits his family members - most of whom are either corrupt or incompetent - to help run it. Julian is earmarked as his successor, but the former is mostly a spoilt brat who enjoys playing pranks on others, in particular Charmaine. Angie plays both right-hand-man and the real love of Damien, even though he is married. Eventually he marries her as his second wife, arousing much jealousy from his first wife (Lui San).

By the second half of the show, Damien has passed away, leaving the firm in the hands of Angie. She has to fend off both Lui's increasing bitterness towards her as well as the sinister plans of Julian's uncles. Meanwhile, Julian has also gotten into a relationship with Charmaine, but it does not last long due to their differences in status, a point which many of Julian's family members drive home as they conspire to force Charmaine out.

Julian is gutted by the breakup, and Angie tries her best to make him focus on taking over the shipping business to not much avail. Belinda Hamnett plays his childhood friend who falls in love with him, but is unable to win his love. She is secretly happy that Charmaine has gotten a new boyfriend, but no matter how hard she tells Julian to give up, the latter refuses to. Even when Charmaine gets married, Julian's heart remains cold.

Subsequently, the shipping business runs into big trouble when Angie is forced to take care of her newborn child and has to leave the business to her brother and Julian's uncles. Foreseeing the firm's bankruptcy, she claims her entitlement under Damien's will, but incurs the wrath of everyone. Charmaine decides to join her husband in England, and Julian is desperate to see her one last time. Belinda dissuades him, but in so doing, gets knocked down by a car when Julian rushes across a road and she pushes him away. She is paralysed for life and Julian promises to take care of her. As it turned out, Angie had claimed her portion of the will not to escape from the family's impending misfortunes, but to have a substantial amount of money to start all over again when the firm was liquidated. She earns the respect of her parents-in-law, as well as Lui's.

The grand finale of the show thus revolves around the unresolved love affair between Julian and Charmaine. Charmaine actually returns to China, bringing news of the demise of her husband. Belinda, realising where Julian's heart is, encourages him to try one last time.
