At the centre of Pok Fu Lam there is an indigenous village, which is often mistaken as a shanty town by the residents of the surrounding apartments, who are nevertheless attracted by Pok Fu Lam's quiet, green environment. Not surprisingly, there are a significant number of expatriates living in Pok Fu Lam, many of whom work at the nearby University of Hong Kong. Pok Fu Lam is also the location for the Queen Mary Hospital (colloquially known as QM, established in 1937), one of Hong Kong's major hospitals. A large section of Victoria Road, is located in Pokfulam. This section of Victoria Road and its vicinity, remains a hidden sad story of Pokfulam. It is notorious for the amount of dumptrucks passing the area, due to a large landfill located in the northern section of Victoria Road. A large Christian cemetary is located along a valley, covering a large majority of the hill, leaving very little vegetation to grow. In the south of Victoria Road, is located Wah Fu Estate, a large public government rental estate, housing thousands of people. In addition, the road's pavements are plagued by vast amounts of dog faeces. In the north of Victoria Road, there is large incinerator, allegedly used to burn illicit drugs. Next to the incinerator is located an abandoned abbatoir and mortuary. The area is isolated from shopping centres and shops. However, there are several schools and a prestigious medical centre located nearby.
