The United States police rank model is generally paramilitary in structure. Although the large and varied number of Federal, state, and local police and sheriff's departments have different ranks, a general model, from lowest to highest rank, would be: Paramilitary designates forces whose function and organization are similar to those of a professional military force, but which are not regarded as having the same status. ...


Officer or Trooper: a recent graduate of a police academy, who wears no insignia of rank.
Some departments have a position of Officer or Trooper First Class, who wear an inverted (point-up) chevron, for police officers with sufficient time in grade who have not been promoted to corporal. This is not a supervisory position.
Corporal: the lowest supervisory position, who would supervise a section of six to eight other officers, who wears two inverted chevrons.
Sergeant: a police officer who supervises an entire watch, made of two to three sections, and wears three inverted chevrons.
Lieutenant: a single gold bar ("Butter bar"), who supervises two to three sergeants.
Captain: two silver bars ("Railroad tracks"), who supervises a precinct.
Inspector: either a gold or silver oak leaf, similar to majors and lieutenant colonels. (In the NYPD, an Inspector wears a gold eagle, similar to a colonel)
Deputy Chief of Police: Two or three stars, similar to a major or lieutenant general.
Chief of Police: Four stars, similar to a full general. Senior police officers may wear fretting ("Scrambled eggs") on their visors. Advancement from Officer to Captain is generally by appointment after successful completion of a series of examinations, and after the officer has sufficient time in grade and with successful conduct (with no legal or administrative difficulties).
