Polk County is a county located in the state of Minnesota. As of 2000, the population is 31,369. Its county seat is Crookston6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 5,174 km˛ (1,998 mi˛). 5,103 km˛ (1,970 mi˛) of it is land and 71 km˛ (27 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.37% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 31,369 people, 12,070 households, and 8,050 families residing in the county. The population density is 6/km˛ (16/mi˛). There are 14,008 housing units at an average density of 3/km˛ (7/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 94.18% White, 0.33% Black or African American, 1.30% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 2.57% from other races, and 1.30% from two or more races. 4.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 12,070 households out of which 32.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.90% are married couples living together, 8.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.30% are non-families. 28.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 3.07.


In the county the population is spread out with 25.90% under the age of 18, 9.70% from 18 to 24, 24.80% from 25 to 44, 22.20% from 45 to 64, and 17.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 98.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.50 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $35,105, and the median income for a family is $44,310. Males have a median income of $31,472 versus $21,535 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,279. 10.90% of the population and 7.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.30% of those under the age of 18 and 10.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
