Ponce de Leon is a town located in Holmes County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 457.

Ponce de Leon is located at 30°43'33" North, 85°56'16" West (30.725783, -85.937783)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 12.8 km² (5.0 mi²). 12.8 km² (4.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.20% is water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 457 people, 200 households, and 131 families residing in the town. The population density is 35.6/km² (92.3/mi²). There are 233 housing units at an average density of 18.2/km² (47.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 91.47% White, 3.06% African American, 2.41% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.53% from other races, and 1.53% from two or more races. 2.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 200 households out of which 30.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.5% are married couples living together, 11.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.5% are non-families. 29.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.29 and the average family size is 2.82.


In the town the population is spread out with 24.9% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 28.0% from 45 to 64, and 15.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 94.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.7 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $25,521, and the median income for a family is $33,250. Males have a median income of $26,339 versus $13,750 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,673. 19.3% of the population and 16.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.2% of those under the age of 18 and 19.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
