Ponte de Lima is a town in the north-west of Portugal, 20 km east from Viana do Castelo, in Viana do Castelo district. It is located in the southern bank of the Lima, a small river with sources in Spain. The municipality has a total area of 321.2 km², 43,421 inhabitants (2001 census), and is divided in 51 civil parishes (or "freguesias"). The local holy day is the 20th of September. One of the oldest towns in Portugal, it was historically significant as a Roman settlement in the road from Braga to Compostela and Lugo, and the first place in Portugal getting a municipal chart. Every second Monday it holds one of the largest country markets in Portugal. The attractive rural area around has the largest concentration of baroque manors in Portugal (Bertiandos, Brandara, Calheiros and Pomarchao are among the best known). Some provide tourism accommodation. The present borough of Ponte de Lima lies between the banks of rivers Neiva and Lima and comprises 51 parishes.
Further downstream is the modern Ponte de Nossa Senhora da Guia, carrying the Braga to Valença N201 highway.
Ponte de Lima's Turismo has produced Trilhos, a folio of half a dozen easy, illustrated walks ranging from seven to 14 km (though the maps and details are not totally reliable).
