A pooram (the name coming from the Malayalam language used by the people of Kerala state of India) is a temple festival and there will be at least one elephant in the procession. Different classification of Poorams

  • A melam is a classic performance of different musical instruments that are unique to Kerala. The most traditional of all melam's is something called a Pandi Melam which is generally performed outside the temples. Another melam called Panchari melam, which is similar to Pandi melam is played when you are inside the temple. See this British Library archive for more details on this.
  • Panchavadyam is another classical musical instrument performed in Kerala, where five instruments are involved in a breathtaking-fastmoving act of percussion (Pancha in Sanskrit means five). The five instruments are Madhalam, Kuzhal, Edakka, Elathalam & Timila.
  • Thayambaka is a solo Chenda (Drum) performance, where the performer uses one stick and the other hand to play the instrument (Chenda) instead of the usual two sticks.

The celebrations in connection with Thrissur Pooram began with the ceremonial `kodiyettam' (hoisting of flag) at the Paramekkavu and Thiruvambadi temples here on Saturday.
The tantri, Puliyannur Kunjaniyan Namboodiripad, officiated the ceremony in the Thiruvambadi temple.
The elephants, Thiruvambadi Sivasundar and Paramekkavu Sreeparameswaran, carried the idols.

"Pooram" is the festival of two consorts of the Thrissur temples - the "Paramekkavu Devi" called "Bhagavathi" from the east and "Thiruvambadi Devi" from the north.
The "Pooram" festival is held in the month of either April or May. This name has originated from the constellation of stars.
The scene of "Pooram" activity is the "Thekkam Kad" ground (an erstwhile teak forest) which is indeed a circular hillock, about 60 acres in extent with a fairly wide road encircling it.
