Albrandswaard (The Netherlands) (255 words)
The name was already mentioned in 1201 in a charter by Count Dirk VII of Holland, in which a grant was documented by Wouter van Egmond, founding father of the family of the counts of Egmond, and Anthonius van Gelmen of "the land Albrandswaard" to the church of Saint Mary in Ter Doest in West-Flanders.
The present coat of arms is derived from the arms of the former municipalities of Rhoon and Poortugaal.
The arms of Poortugaal is a deliberate attempt to imitate the arms of the country of Portugal - however the name of Poortugaal originated from Latin "Portus Gallicus" = Gallic port.
