Port Aventura is a theme park in the holiday resort of Salou, Spain, on the Costa Dorada ("Gold Coast"). It is 1 hour from Barcelona and has 2 airports within 30 minutes of it. It was concieved and built by the British-based Tussauds Group, but was sold, two years after opening in 1997 to Universal. It is now owned and operated by a local group of investors, but as of 2004 the Universal name has been dropped from the branding. In 2004 NBC Universal(Universal Studios' parent) sold all interest in Port Aventura. It was previously called Universal Mediterranea It is one of the largest in Europe.
