Port Lavaca is a city located in Calhoun County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 12,035. It is the county seat of Calhoun County6.

The city of Port Lavaca is located on Lavaca Bay, the western extension of Matagorda Bay.


Port Lavaca is located at 28°36'56" North, 96°37'47" West (28.615635, -96.629741)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 35.3 km˛ (13.6 mi˛). 25.4 km˛ (9.8 mi˛) of it is land and 10.0 km˛ (3.8 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 28.23% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 12,035 people, 4,189 households, and 3,133 families residing in the city. The population density is 474.6/km˛ (1,229.9/mi˛). There are 4,791 housing units at an average density of 188.9/km˛ (489.6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 71.95% White, 4.05% African American, 0.47% Native American, 3.96% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 16.92% from other races, and 2.58% from two or more races. 52.11% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 4,189 households out of which 39.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.5% are married couples living together, 13.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.2% are non-families. 21.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.83 and the average family size is 3.31.


In the city the population is spread out with 30.3% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 99.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.8 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $33,626, and the median income for a family is $38,250. Males have a median income of $35,526 versus $18,427 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,431. 20.1% of the population and 16.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.0% of those under the age of 18 and 14.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Port Lavaca, originally known as Lavaca, the county seat of Calhoun County, is in the north central part of the county (at 28°37' N, 96°38' W) on the west coast of Lavaca Bay.
Lavaca fulfilled this expectation, succeeding Linnville as the busiest port on the adjoining Matagorda and Lavaca bays during the period of the Republic of Texas.
The population of Port Lavaca rose from 2,069 in 1940 to 5,062 in 1950, 8,864 in 1960, and 10,491 in 1970.
