The Port Melbourne railway line was a suburban railway in Melbourne, Australia. It was the first significant railway in Australia, Opening in 1854 to carry passengers arriving in Victoria at Station Pier, and to alleviate the high costs of shipping goods via small vessels up the Yarra River to Melbourne.
