Port Tobacco Village is a town located in Charles County, Maryland. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 15. Established in 1727, the town has become almost a ghost town.

History

In colonial and early American times Port Tobacco was one the second largest town in Maryland. As silt and tidal action changed the Tobacco River and coastline ships became larger. Cut off from the sea its importance decreased. Bypassed by the railroads in the nineteenth century, the decline continued.


Geography

Port Tobacco Village is located at 38°30'41" North, 77°1'12" West (38.511500, -77.019937)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.4 km˛ (0.2 mi˛). 0.4 km˛ (0.2 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 15 people, 5 households, and 5 families residing in the town. The population density is 36.2/km˛ (94.0/mi˛). There are 6 housing units at an average density of 14.5/km˛ (37.6/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 60.00% White, 26.67% Black or African American, 6.67% Asian, and 6.67% from two or more races.


There are 5 households out of which 40.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.0% are married couples living together, 60.0% have a female householder with no husband present. The average household size is 3.00 and the average family size is 2.80.


In the town the population is spread out with 20.0% under the age of 18, 13.3% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 20.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 87.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 71.4 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $100,992, and the median income for a family is $102,264. The per capita income for the town is $43,017. There are no families below the poverty line.

In 1904, Christ Church of Port Tobacco Parish, which had stood alongside the old courthouse since both had been rebuilt at the beginning of the 19th century, was dissassembled stone by stone and timber by timber.
Such was the definitive event that symbolized the end of Port Tobacco’s long-held dominance as a center of commerce and governance.
