PORTARLINGTON, a market town situated partly in King's county but chiefly in Queen's county, Ireland, on both banks of the river Barrow, here the county boundary.
south of the town, is the fine demesne of the earls of Portarlington, a title granted to the family of Dawson in 1785.
Portarlington was incorporated in 1667, and was a parliamentary borough both before the Union and after, its representation in the imperial parliament (by one member) being merged in that of the county by the Redistribution Act of 1885.
Situated between Drysdale and Indented Head, Portarlington sits on the very edge of the Bellarine Peninsula and is one of the regions best loved holiday and some-what low key resort towns which is very child friendly.
Portarlington is home to about 2400 people (including neighboring Indented Head) and is about 30 km from the centre of Geelong and 104 km south of Melbourne via the Freeway and Highway but only 27 km across the Port Philllip Bay.
Portarlington is a great place for camping, a picnic or just a quite spot of fishing off the pier that is located only meters from the Grand Hotel and the restored rotunda.
