The Portland and Seattle soccer rivalry dates back to the NASL days of the 1970's and 1980's. Several cards being given out are a common sight in these derby matches. The two club supporters groups, Timbers Army & Emerald City Supporters, have an extreme distaste for each other, which dates back from when the Timbers entered the league in 2001. Timbers I: NASL

In 1974, the North American Soccer League awarded an expansion franchise to Portland, Oregon. The new team, named the Timbers, began play in the 1975 season. In their inaugural season, the Timbers went to the championship game Soccer Bowl but lost to the Tampa Bay Rowdies 2-0. It was during this magical season that Portland became known as "Soccer City USA". While the Timbers boasted some of the league's best fan support, they frequently struggled on the field. Despite going to the championship game in their first season, they missed the play offs in 1976 and 1977. In 1978, they went to the Conference Finals before falling to the New York Cosmos. Portland Timbers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (341 words)
The Portland Timbers are Portland, Oregon's entry in the USL First Division, the second tier of professional soccer in the United States.
The Timbers' hardcore fans are known as the Timbers Army.
The lead fan is Timber Jim, a wild man who wields a live chainsaw around the field, cutting off a slab of a log each time the team scores.
VANCOUVER 1 PORTLAND 0 (933 words)

The Timbers defence dealt capably with the problems that were being created, until the 56th minute when the Whitecaps almost stole the opener.
