The real (plural réis) was the unit of currency in Portugal until 1911. By the 19th century, it's value had declined to such an extent that single real coins were no longer issued.


Various silver and gold coins circulated, including the silver crusado (400 réis before 1826, 480 réis after) and the gold peca (6400 réis before 1826, 7500 after).


A decimal system was adopted for in 1835 based on the réis and milréis (worth 1000 réis).


The milréis was replaced by the escudo at par in 1911. The escudo was the official currency of Portugal prior to the introduction of the euro in January 1, 1999 (euro coins and notes were not introduced until 2002). ...
