Post mortem interval (PMI) is the time that has elapsed since a person has died. If the time in question is not known, a number of medical/scientific techniques are used to determine it.

A recurring problem in forensic medicine is the need to fix the time of death within the limits of probability, the longer the interval of time between death and the examination of the body, the wider will be the limits of probability.
