Richard and Joshu are cousins, and claim to have first written music together as teenagers. In 1999, after sending a demo CD to Skam Records with a note inside stating "will gig for Vodka". They were offered a live slot supporting Altern8 and a release on the upcoming 'SMAK' 12" series. Apparently they are still awaiting the vodka. Skam Records, based in Manchester, is an Electronic/IDM record label founded by Andy Maddocks around 1990. ...

The pair have stated their method for writing music involves renting an isolated house or cottage and locking themselves away for several weeks with no telephone, television, or internet. In 2000, the duo moved to London and began running a series of electronic music clubnights called 'Seed'. These nights increased in size and soon relocated to Aldwych tube station, a disused underground train station. A number of these events took place between 2001 and 2005, and amongst the artists who appeared were Aphex Twin, Alison Goldfrapp, Richard X, Plaid, Luke Vibert, and Funkstörung. The last of these events were to be held on the 13th and 14th of November 2005, however, one of the DJ's set to play, John Peel died less than a fortnight before the event. The following week, the night was cancelled due to London Underground pulling the venue, and on the night of the event, John Balance of Coil (who were also on the bill to play) also passed away. Aldwych tube station is a disused station formerly on the Piccadilly Line of the London Underground, and now part of Kings College London. ...
