History

Prairie Grove was the site of the Battle of Prairie Grove during the American Civil War. Confederate forces under General Thomas C. Hindman attempted to prevent the juncture of two Federal forces under Generals James G. Blunt and Francis J. Herron. The result of the battle was a tactical stalemate which assured permanent Union control of northwest Arkansas. The battlefield is now a State Military Park.


Geography

Prairie Grove is located at 35°58'37" North, 94°18'58" West (35.976919, -94.316167)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.4 km˛ (2.1 mi˛). 5.4 km˛ (2.1 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,540 people, 981 households, and 707 families residing in the city. The population density is 469.2/km˛ (1,212.6/mi˛). There are 1,054 housing units at an average density of 194.7/km˛ (503.2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 95.04% White, 0.51% Black or African American, 1.50% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.67% from other races, and 1.77% from two or more races. 2.05% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 981 households out of which 35.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.0% are married couples living together, 10.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.9% are non-families. 26.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.05.


In the city the population is spread out with 27.5% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 85.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.6 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $34,628, and the median income for a family is $41,972. Males have a median income of $30,227 versus $20,479 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,154. 9.6% of the population and 6.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.5% of those under the age of 18 and 12.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
