Prairie du Chien is a town located in Crawford County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,076. The City of Prairie du Chien is located partially within the town.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 94.1 km² (36.3 mi²). 86.9 km² (33.6 mi²) of it is land and 7.2 km² (2.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.62% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 1,076 people, 434 households, and 311 families residing in the town. The population density is 12.4/km² (32.1/mi²). There are 848 housing units at an average density of 9.8/km² (25.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.42% White, 0.00% Black or African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.84% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.28% from two or more races. 0.28% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 434 households out of which 30.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.3% are married couples living together, 9.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.3% are non-families. 24.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 2.93.
