Encyclopedia > Preservers

In the fictional universe of Star Trek, the Preservers are an ancient race of aliens who visited Earth thousands of years ago and removed some human specimens from the planet. Star Trek is an American science-fiction franchise spanning six television series, ten feature films, hundreds of novels, computer and video games, and other fan stories. ... For a scientific theory point of view, see extraterrestrial life. ... // Earth (IPA: , often referred to as the Earth, Terra, or Planet Earth) is the third planet in the solar system in terms of distance from the Sun, and the fifth largest. ...

The aliens then "seeded" these humans on other planets within the galaxy that had similar Earth-like environments. NGC 4414, a typical spiral galaxy in the constellation Coma Berenices, is about 56,000 light years in diameter and approximately 60 million light years distant. ...

No one is sure why the aliens did this, and most speculate that it was part of a great experiment to test the adaptability of humans, whom the aliens believed would one day serve as their replacements. It appears that the Preservers themselves were a dying race and no longer exist. The only evidence of their culture are ancient artifacts and ruins that litter various humanoid worlds.

Many races that have been encountered have a sketchy pre-history, some unable to explain their sudden appearance on their worlds, while other cultures have clearly documented evidence that they are not native to their home planets.

The Preservers are discussed explicitly in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode "The Paradise Syndrome", in which Preserver technology inadvertently (and temporarily) erases Captain Kirk's memory, and the amnesiac Kirk settles down in a Preserver-seeded society of Native Americans. Although popular in fan fiction, the Preservers are never again featured in explicit canon. In the Star Trek Voyager episode "Natural Law" an unidentified race that may be the Preservers erects a forcefield to protect an indigenous culture on a Delta Quadrant planet. The idea that the Preservers are the "Progenitor" aliens featured in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "The Chase" is uncertain and debated amongst Star Trek fans. Although their "seeding" actions seem to parallel that of the Preservers, the Progenitors may in fact be a different culture entirely. As well, the Progenitors are active billions of years before the Preservers are active. FDA/CBER - Thimerosal in Vaccines (4582 words)
In the following pages, a discussion of preservatives, the use of thimerosal as a preservative, guidelines on exposure to organomercurials (primarily methylmercury), thimerosal toxicity, recent and future FDA actions, and the conclusions of the Institute of Medicine's most recent review of thimerosal in vaccines are presented.
In some cases, preservatives are added during manufacture to prevent microbial growth; with changes in manufacturing technology, however, the need to add preservatives during the manufacturing process has decreased markedly.
At concentrations found in vaccines, thimerosal meets the requirements for a preservative as set forth by the United States Pharmacopeia; that is, it kills the specified challenge organisms and is able to prevent the growth of the challenge fungi (U.S. Pharmacopeia 2004).
Preservative Treated Wood - Publications - BM&WT - UMass Amherst (3919 words)
The wood preserving industry didn't begin in earnest though, until the late 1800s when America's railroads, faced with a shortage of naturally-durable woods for crossties, started saturating non-durable woods with creosote.
In addition to creosote, preservatives fall into two classes, oil-borne and water-borne, depending on whether they are carried into wood in an organic liquid or water.
Preservative penetration and retention with self-treating are minimal.
