This is a list of Presidents of the unrecognised Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, a separatist movement that controlled most of Chechnya from 1991 to 1999 (see First Chechen War, Second Chechen War). Ichkeria's last de facto Presidential elections were held in 1997. Bordering Stavropol Krai to the northwest, the republic of Dagestan to the northeast and east, Georgia to the south, and the republics of Ingushetia and North Ossetia to the west, it is located in the Northern Caucasus mountains, in the Southern Federal District.
The president of this government was Aslan Maskhadov, the Foreign Minister was Ilyas Akhmadov, who was the spokeman for Maskhadov.
President Maskhadov was unable to influence a number of warlords who retain effective control over Chechen territory, and his power was diminished as a result.
Dzhokhar Dudaev - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (1637 words)
After a referendum in October 1991 confirmed Dudayev in his new position as president of "Ichkeria", he unilaterally declared the republic's sovereignty and its secession from the Russian Federation.
President Dudayev was killed on April 21 1996 by two laser-guided missiles when he was using a satellite phone, after his location was detected by a Russian reconnaissance aircraft, which intercepted his phone call.
