Quotes

  • Brittany Wells: I like this music. Can you buy the soundtrack to pornos?

Kimberly Joyce: Tiffany Minx, Stephanie Swift... You know, Brittany, a lot of these porn stars have names that sound like ours. So if we wanted to, when we grow up, we could be porn stars. You couldn't, Randa. I'm sorry.

Randa: That is quite alright.

  • Randa: [watching a porno] Why is that woman - why is she doing those things with another woman? Why must they show this?

Kimberly Joyce: Because men like to watch it.

Randa: But it is a sin!

Kimberly Joyce: [laughs] Randa! Randa, you're gonna find out that a lot of things men like are a sin.

For all its attempts at dark satire, "Pretty Persuasion" is oddly moralistic, only going so far in its ridiculous caricatures and hit-you-over-the-head dialogue to make the daring point that youngsters, as products of dysfunctional households, will often--gasp!--resort to cruelty to gain attention.
News outlets, becoming more and more like infotainment, use debacles like the Michael Jackson trial to uphold morality, all the while ignoring Darfur and Baghdad; "Pretty Persuasion" is a minor version of the same hypocrisy, addressing Important Issues via sensationalist, manipulative means whilst chastising its protagonist for the destructiveness of her sensationalist, manipulative behavior.
Pretty Persuasion (2005) (563 words)
But not as persuasive as the dark comedy it strives to be and that is where it was striving to be.
Pretty Persuasion is a story of privilege run amok in the form of a 15-year-old girl (Wood).
Pretty Persuasion is not as dark as Heathers (1989), not as funny as Saved (2004), and is a completely mean-spirited version of Clueless (1995).
