The Prime Minister of Cape Verde is the head of government in the archipelago country of Cape Verde. The National Assembly nominates the Prime Minister for the President's formal appointment. In turn, the Prime Minister makes recommendations for the Council of Ministers. The position has existed since Cape Verde won independence from Portugal in 1975.

While the modern office of Prime Minister developed in the UK the first actual usage of the word Prime Minister or Premier Ministre was used by Cardinal Richelieu, when, in 1624 he was named to head the royal council as prime minister of France.
The Prime Minister is formally the presiding minister of the Privy Council and the cabinet.
Contrary to popular and journalistic belief, most prime ministers in parliamentary systems are not appointed for a specific term of office and in effect may remain in power through a number of elections and parliaments.
