Prince Carl of Sweden, Carl Gustaf Oscar Fredrik Christian (January 1, 1911 - 2003), Duke of Ostrogothia, was the youngest child of Prince Carl of Sweden and Norway, Duke of Westrogothia. To distinguish him from his father, he was widely known as Carl Jr.
When he married Countess Elsa von Rosen on July 6, 1937, he had to relinquish his succession rights and his royal titles, but was in stead granted the title Prince Bernadotte by his brother-in-law King Leopold III of the Belgians.
Carl divorced Elsa in 1951 and married twice more, first Anna Margareta Larsson and then Kristine Rivelsrud.
This was merely a temporary solution and in 1810 the Swedish Riksdag of the Estates chose the Marshal of France, Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte as heir apparent to the Swedish throne.
As the Crown Prince of Sweden he assumed the name Charles (Karl Johan), acted officially as regent for the remainder of Charles XIII's reign and secured a union between Sweden and Norway in 1814.
Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte reigned as King Charles XIV of Sweden and Carl III Johan of Norway from February 5, 1818 until his death on March 8, 1844.
PrinceCarl of Sweden and Norway, Oscar Carl Vilhelm (February 27, 1861 - October 24, 1951), Duke of Westrogothia, was the third son of King Oscar II of Sweden and Norway.
PrinceCarl was once considered a candidate to the Norwegian crown during Norway's fight for independence from Sweden in 1905.
The present King Harald V of Norway is hence a grandchild of PrinceCarl, Duke of Westrogothia.
