PGCPS Magnet Programs/Contextual Learning Environments

Unlike many other school systems throughout the country, most PGCPS Magnet Programs, known as "Contextual Learning Environments", are operated as "School-Within-A-School" programs. There are no dedicated magnet schools at the high school level, but there are a few at the elementary and middle school level. The Creative & Performing Arts, French Immersion, and Montessori Programs are all housed in specialized dedicated centers, where all students who attend those schools take part in the program. The PGCPS magnet program underwent an extensive reorganization in 2003, after a court mandate which determined that race was no longer a justification for the then current structure of the magnet schools program, and that the system school move towards returning students to neighborhood schools to make schools more community oriented as well as reduce costs associated with cross-county busing of magnet students. As a result of the court ruling, PGCPS magnet programs went from one of the most largest specialized programs in the nation to one of the smallest. Nearly all magnet programs were slowly phased out since 2003 with the final programs slated for elimination ending at the end of the 2006-07 school year.
