In 1968, Prince Hassan married Pakistani Sarvath Ikramullah. From 1965-1999, he served as Crown Prince of Jordan in place of the King's son, Abdullah, who was still very young. Due to the number of assassination attempts on his life, King Hussein had worried about the potential risk of leaving Jordan in the hands of a child. King Hussein, terminally ill with cancer, later reverted the succession back to Abdullah (who was then 37 years old) on January 24th, 1999.
