Overview

This division has specific rules about engines, components, bodies, etc. Pro Modifieds can either be raced on 1/4 mile or 1/8 mile tracks. Pro Modified has only been around for about 15 years, whereas other classes are much older. Despite this, it has become one of the most popular divisions of the sport. The Pro Modified division was a spin-off of the IHRA's Top Sportsman division but with fewer limitations, allowing for significantly higher performance. Engines

The rules of engines in Pro Modified are simple and straight forward. The engine can either have up to 527 cubic inches and be supercharged and methanol fueled, or it can have a larger 740 cubic inch engine that utilizes nitrous oxide and gasoline. Turbocharged engines are not allowed. These engines put out an extremely large amount of horsepower, some at approximately 2500 H.P. The engines propel the cars down the track at speeds of over 200 mph. There are weight limits, according to the type of engine used, 2375 lb. for nitrous powered cars, and 2700 lb. for supercharged (or blown) cars. With close to two dozen Pro Modified teams in Ontario and Western New York, there was a need for these teams to compete on a regular basis in front of their local fans.
Missouri's Tim McAmis was the first IHRA Pro Modified champ in 1990, and cars were running the low to mid-seven elapsed times with speeds of around 200 mph.
Today's Pro Modified teams have the choice of running either a supercharged engine with a maximum displacement of 527 cubic inches, or an unblown-engine with nitrous oxide in a powerplant of up to a whopping 740 cubic inches.

Pro Modified was a kinder and gentler place to race in those days.
Fast forward the class a dozen years and it appears that the same kind of cataclysmic changes that occurred to Pro Modified in the early nineties are about to happen again, except this time they may be even more traumatic for the competitors.
Up to this point in the history of Pro Mod only Scotty Cannon has had that kind of program and all he did was win six IHRA World Championships and totally dominate the class.
