Proastiakos train in Athens Central Railway Station

The Proastiakos (Greek: Προαστιακός meaning literally "the Suburban") is the suburban railway system of Athens, Greece. It currently connects Athens Central Railway Station (Larissa Station) with Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport and Corinth. There are plans to extend the Proastiakos to Loutraki in the south, Thiva and Chalkida in the north and East Attica, as well as Piraeus and Elefsina. This new rail system is operated by OSE (Organismos Sidirodromon Ellados, Οργανισμός Σιδηροδρόμων Ελλάδος in Greek), which controls all railways of Greece. The route of the line was first marked out in 1994. In 1997, bridges were constructed. During the construction of the route 6 of the Attiki Odos in the late 1990s, space was left between the main carriageways for the Proastiakos line.
