R. Bindu is wife of CPM central committee member A. Vijayaraghavan. She is a professor at Sree Kerala Varma College, Thrissur. The alternated reservation of mayorship for ladies took its turn at Thrissur and this brought her the present post. In the elections to the local bodies held in the month of September 2005, she contested and won as a candidate of Left Democratic Front pioneered by the Communist Party of India ( Marxist ).
