History

Politically-oriented talk radio is almost as old as radio itself. The controversial and extremely conservative Father Charles Coughlin was a massively successful Roman Catholic priest who, from the start of his radio career in 1926 until he was forced to leave radio in 1942 attacked President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the New Deal and Communism from his bully pulpit while expressing what many consider to be pro-Nazi and anti-semitic views. Over time, there had been other precursors of talk radio, such as Los Angeles-area talker Joe Pyne, who was highly confrontational toward callers on his program in the early 1960s. Bob Grant in New York City and Wally George in Southern California [1] were both similar in this regard, and some say that hosts such as these led to the confrontational manner that most talk radio is today. Charles Coughlin Father Charles Edward Coughlin (October 25, 1891 – October 27, 1979) was a Canadian-born Roman Catholic priest from Royal Oak, Michigans Shrine of the Little Flower Catholic Church, and one of the first evangelists to preach to a widespread listening audience over the medium of radio during... Left-leaning talk radio has been around for many decades, though was not as widespread as conservative-leaning talk. In the 1960s, freeform rock stations featured outspoken air personalities who mixed progressive rock with controversial commentary and news reports on current events such as the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights Movement. A few talk stations, such as WMCA in New York and WERE in Cleveland even featured controversial counterculture talk programming. Politically-oriented talk radio stations up until the early 1990s featured left-leaning hosts such as Alan Berg and Alex Bennett sharing the schedule with more conservative personalities. The rise of conservative talk, and the fall of liberal talk

The United States saw dramatic growth in the popularity of talk radio during the 1990s. The repeal of the FCC "fairness doctrine" in 1987-which had required that stations provide free air time for responses to any controversial opinions that were broadcast-provided an opportunity for a kind of flatly partisan (and often intentionally inflammatory) programming that had not previously existed. Talk radio provided an immediacy and a high degree of emotionalism that seldom is reached on television or in magazines. Pew researchers found in 2004 that 17% of the public regularly listens to talk radio. This audience is mostly male, middle-aged, well-educated and conservative. The most successful pioneer in the 1990s talk radio movement was the politically conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh. Limbaugh's success demonstrated that there was a nation-wide market for passionately delivered conservative (and in most cases, partisan Republican) commentary on contemporary news, events, and social trends. Other radio talk show hosts (who describe themselves as either conservative or libertarian) jumped on the bandwagon. Over time, people like Sean Hannity, G. Gordon Liddy, Michael Savage, Neal Boortz, Bill O'Reilly, and Glenn Beck tried to grab their piece of the pie. The Salem Radio Network syndicates a group of right-wing activists, including evangelical Christian Hugh Hewitt and Jewish conservatives Dennis Prager and Michael Medved. Many of these hosts also publish books, write newspaper columns, appear on television, and give public lectures (Limbaugh, again, was a pioneer of this model of multi-media punditry). In the radio business, new ideas are seldom tried unless they have some record of success. With the rise of conservative talk radio, struggling AM radio stations throughout the United States immediately went all-conservative talk. Of course, this left many liberal hosts out in the cold. The cookie-cutter mentality of radio programming rendered these types of hosts obsolete. By this time, liberal talk was limited to the occasional successful local hosts such as Randi Rhodes in Florida (who at times got better ratings than Limbaugh, her lead-in), Bernie Ward in San Francisco and Michael Jackson in Los Angeles. public radio shows like Democracy Now, small startup networks such as I.E. America that relied heavily on internet webcasting, or hosts who attempted syndication with little success such as Jim Hightower or Mario Cuomo. And after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and the leadup to the Iraq War, radio owners such as Clear Channel Communications, Salem Communications, and Disney worked hard to eliminate anything resembling liberal opinion on their radio stations. Liberal talk makes a comeback

Soon, many people became irritated at this approach, likening the dominance of conservative talk radio to propaganda (many large media conglomerates were heavy donors to the Republican Party, and it was widely known that the party sends talking points faxes to various hosts, presenting their spin on current events, intending for them to follow]]. Many people started wondering why there were hardly any left-leaning host on the airwaves, particulary as the nation grew divided over the Iraq War and the slowing down of the economy during the Bush Administration. At the beginning, the fledgling network signed a handful of affiliates, though mostly on small AM signals. One noteworthy original affiliate was a struggling AM station in Portland, Oregon, which had a powerful signal but an underperforming oldies format. KPOJ, ironically owned by Clear Channel Communications, combined a few Air America shows with Ed Schultz's afternoon show, creating a template that many other stations would soon follow. KPOJ was the first station to call its format "Progressive Talk", and in its first ratings period following the switch, went from bottom of the local ratings to being one of the top-rated stations in the market. The industry took notice of this accomplishment. Soon, Clear Channel decided to roll out the format on many of their struggling AMs across the country. Success soon followed for their new progressive talk stations in markets like Denver and Miami. The format was even gaining success in markets considered to be rather conservative, such as San Diego. Air America's flagship affiliate, WLIB in New York, was successful, with midday host Franken drawing more heavily desired younger listeners than Limbaugh and O'Reilly on two more powerful competitors.
