Prosperity is a town located in Newberry County, South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,047.

Prosperity is located at 34°12'38" North, 81°32'4" West (34.210657, -81.534347)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.5 km˛ (2.1 mi˛). 5.5 km˛ (2.1 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,047 people, 415 households, and 293 families residing in the town. The population density is 191.6/km˛ (495.9/mi˛). There are 456 housing units at an average density of 83.4/km˛ (216.0/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 53.20% White, 44.79% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.67% Asian, 0.48% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.67% from two or more races. 2.39% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 415 households out of which 33.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.0% are married couples living together, 19.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% are non-families. 26.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.01.


In the town the population is spread out with 27.8% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 78.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.5 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $30,875, and the median income for a family is $39,261. Males have a median income of $31,406 versus $19,226 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,323. 16.9% of the population and 14.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.5% of those under the age of 18 and 14.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
