Elis (Greek: Επαρχία Ηλείας Eparchia Ilias) is a province covering the northern half of the Elis Prefecture. The main places includesPyrgos, Amaliada, Gastouni, Lechaina, Vartholomio, Varda, Andravida, Myrsini, Lampeia and Kyllini. The mountains dominate the northeast, the central part and the southeastern part including the northwest where Chlemoutsi is located. The province is bounded with the prefecture of Achaia to the northeast, Arcadia to the east and the Olympia Province to the south. The Ionian Sea is to the west. Farmlands lie to around Pyrgos, the northeast and the northern part. The province is the westernmost in the Peloponnese. The central part of the province are covered with forests and grasslands along with groves. The province is home to about 80% of the entire prefectural population and about 2/3 of the prefectural land. The largest city and municipality in population is Pyrgos. Amaliada is followed second. Ilia Chavchavadze (Georgian: ილია ჭავჭავაძე) (October 27, 1837 – August 30, 1907) was a prominent figure of new Georgian literature, world-renowned writer, famous public benefactor, jurist, poet, novelist, humanist, publisher, philosopher and leader of the Georgia's National-liberation movement in 1861-1907.
Ilia's political ideologies consisted of democracy and liberal nationalism and his poltical movement was a Georgian response to the Revolutions of 1848.
Ilia was a son of Grigol Chavchavadze and Mariam Beburishvili and Grigol, like his father and ancestor had a military background and he with the local militiamen protected the village from numbers of Dagestani invasions.
