Rovigo (It. Provincia di Rovigo) is a province in the Veneto region of Italy. Its capital is the city of Rovigo.


It has an area of 1,790 sq km, and a total population of 242,538 (2001). There are 50 communes in the province (source: Italian institute of statistics Istat, see this link (http://www.upinet.it/indicatore.asp?id_statistiche=6)).

Rovigo is the chief town in the Polesine (Po Delta), lying between the rivers Po and Adige, but more in the vicinity of the latter which is amongst the most fertile flat land in Italy.
The province corresponds with the area called Polesine (a name deriving from the medieval Latin 'policinum' signifying a marshy area), one which is completely flat, formed in recent times by the accumulation of fluvial silts deposited amongst the lower reaches of the Adige and the Po rivers.
