Canada is a federation of ten provinces that, together with three territories , make up the world's second largest country in total area.
On September 1, 1905, the portion of Northwest Territories south of the 60° parallel became the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan.
The provincial political climate of Quebec is quite different: the main split is between sovereigntism (of which separatism is generally held to be one strain), represented by the Parti Québécois, and federalism, represented primarily by the Parti Libéral du Québec.

From August 30 to September 1, 1881, the territorial capital at Battleford was visited by the Governor General of Canada , the Marquis of Lorne.
The decision to move the territorial capital from Battleford to Regina was made in June, 1882, by Lieutenant Governor Dewdney in consultation with W.C. Van Horne, the General Manager of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, and Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald.
